Why Some Bookings & Roles Should be Kept Secret

So, you just booked the role of a lifetime - Congrats! You want to shout it from the mountain tops, tweet it, snapchat it, and Facebook it. I understand. I understand completely, but I advise against doing that. Let me clarify what I mean.

We all get excited when new things happen to us! As actors, we know it's an incredibly competitive industry and want to celebrate every victory by telling others what we've booked. However, celebrating prematurely can be disastrous! If you're like me, you've jumped the gun and celebrated a booking only to later find out the project isn't as exciting as you thought it'd be. I'm not saying don't celebrate, I'm all for having a good time and enjoying every success (big or small) but there's a time and place for everything. Don't feel obligated to brag about what you have going on. Believe it or not: In an industry where big personalities and unique abilities rule, modesty is still the best policy.

Another reason you may not want to tell the whole world about every project you have is because, many times, it's a huge No-No as far as non-disclosure agreements go. We all sign one when we book a project -- and the bigger the gig, the more serious the offense. Don't get blacklisted or sued because you couldn't keep quiet. Be a professional and take every opportunity with a humble attitude of gratitude. Taking pictures on set is often prohibited, but even if you take pictures in the holding areas or outside of the set you may still be penalized. So, be careful and post with caution!!! There's beauty in modesty, humility, and secrecy - even in an industry that seems to promote the opposite.
